The Black Hills of South Dakota

Dead Presidents, May 2012

Guess where we went today?

Oh, that's right, you all know this place. I've never been here before today, but the wife was as a teenager with her parents and two younger sisters. She promises me that she enjoyed it more with me, but then she was a 13 year old stuck in the back seat of a car for a month with a 10 year old and a 3 year old. It's a low bar to hurdle.

Mt. Rushmore, despite being such an incredible cliche and an image you've seen a thousand times, was quite impressive. The artistry of the sculpture at the scale is amazing. And we had the luxury (which hopefully will continue) of being at the very start of the season, and thus having no crowds to deal with. The entire schedule for this trip, in fact was designed around us arriving at Yellowstone the day after our hotel opens for the season.

Don't mess with me, sucka, May 2012

After seeing the dead Presidents and having lunch we visited Wind Cave National Park and took the cave tour. Then we drove back here to Audrie's via Custer State Park, known for its wildlife. This bison didn't appear very wild, but the signs all over the place assured us he was. Along with the several dozen other bison in his herd.

We're now back in our little cabin by the brook, savoring some wine and fruit and about to go in the hot tub for a bit. It doesn't get much better than this.
